Competency & Courses
CDM Co-Ordinators - Individuals
CDM Co-Ordinators need good
interpersonal skills in order
to encourage co-operation between
designers and others.
CDM Co-Ordinators have a specific
duty to ensure that co-operation
happens. Without co-operation good
working relationships, clear co-operation
and sharing of information will
not happen.
CDM Co-Ordinators need a sound
understanding of
- Health and safety in construction
work.
- The design process and specific
tasks to be undertaken and the
risks which the work will entail.
- The importance of co-ordination
of the design process and on
ability to identify information
which others will need to know
in order to carry out their work
safely.
- Knowledge relevant to project,
maintenance, use refurbishment
etc.
CDM Co-ordinators must have suitable
qualifications, skills and experience
in design and construction and
Health and Safety qualifications
(eg CITB CSCS/NEBOSH construction certificate
+ Academy of Project Co-ordinators
CDM Certificate (AcPC3)
or equivalent).

FUTURE STRATEGY
Looking into health and safety
and its cultures over the past
14 years since the introduction
of:
CONSTRUCTION, DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT
REGULATIONS 1994
It is apparent that the areas with
the weakest link to any health
and safety culture is the:
‘MIDDLE MANAGEMENT’
those responsible for daily ‘hands-on’ activities
not just health and safety issues.
MIDDLE MANAGEMENT
Involves health and safety officers/managers
in every workplace both temporary
and permanent.
It also involves ‘in-house’ or
consultant CDM Co-ordinators.
It also involves any workplace
management with construction, demolition,
extensions, alterations, conversions,
fixed plant, maintenance or cleaning.
THE WAY FORWARD
Is very similar for both health
and safety officers/managers and
planning supervisors / project
co-ordinators, with basic health
and safety awareness of prime importance
with the specific training in other
risk management areas to complete
the ‘hands-on’ competency
and capability.
The new Construction Design and
Management Regulations (2007) should improve the management
of risk and will ensure that responsibility
is placed on the best person to
influence and manage the risk.
The Academy has therefore decided
to promote a new CDM certificate ACPC3.
Successful candidates can raise
their level of competency and membership
to Registered Member with designation RMACC.
CDM CERTIFICATE (ACPC 3)
The intermediate certificate has now been replaced by NEBOSH Construction certificate.
With so many Construction Work Projects lasting more than 30 working days, especially smaller projects, in construction, demolitions, maintenance, and repairs, etc., the problem of employing outside Consultants to notify HSE and act as, Co-ordinator as required by LAW, can be costly.
Why not train up your own Employee who with CDM knowledge could become competent to take up the "in house" role of CDM Co-ordinator.
The Academy is introducing a CDM Certificate for all "would be" Co-ordinators.
Passing this Certificate will enable employees, with basic Health & Safety knowledge, to gain further competency to seek and practise as "in-house" CDM Co-ordinators.
With the backing of the Academy such employees can take the first step towards CDM capability in the construction industry.
The Academy will advise and act as a back up for all would be "in-house" CDM Co-ordinators on their first small project.
(Fees will be negotiated for large projects where we act as "mentor")
Every project lasting more than 30 working days must have a CDM Co-ordinator.
The CDM Certificate will be 2 days run over 2 weeks and attracts 5 CPD points.
As CDM Co-ordinators are required on so many projects, both small and large, it is essential that all clients, principal contractors and contractors are aware of the need to appoint "in-house" or Consultant Co-Ordinators.
ASSOCIATION OF CDM CO-ORDINATORS
This CDM Course will be accepted by the Association of CDM Co-Ordinators as part qualification towards membership. |
